Wind propulsion specialist BAR Technologies is partnering with Nervion Naval Offshore (Nervion) to manage and oversee the production of BAR’s WindWings product in Europe
A subsidiary of Spanish Group Amper, Nervion is a pioneer in the floating offshore wind platform segment and has factories in Ferrol and Galicia, Spain.
The deal marks BAR’s first manufacturing partnership outside China. In January, the company sealed an agreement with China Merchants that will see the latter offer sales and manufacturing in China.
Nervion will manage the value chain of procurement and construction of WindWings, their installation throughout shipyards in Europe, servicing the technology in the course of their operational lifecycle, alongside training crews to operate the wing sails.
BAR Technologies will continue to innovate and establish additional WindWings sizes and offerings.
Speaking when signing the agreement in Spain, BAR chief executive John Cooper said the Nervion partnership enables the company to work with an organisation with a legacy in wind energy manufacturing and enhance the geographical availability of WindWings.
The 37.5-m WindWings are made from aluminum and “designed to last the lifetime of the vessel,” according to the company. Each wing weighs roughly 200 tonnes and is fitted with sensors to automatically maximise power and fuel savings.
The company said WindWings are designed to be removed and retrofitted easily. Last year, BAR’s partner Cargill retrofitted two chartered bulkers with the wing sails to trial the product.
